  • Productivity for Your Business: Graduation Words of Advice

This month I attended my sister-in-law's college graduation ceremony. I'm very proud of her. She received her Bachelor's degree - finally in her late 30's. She is working and raising two toddlers at the same time, not to mention shepherding my brother too! I applaud everyone who completes a dream, while juggling life's tasks of work, family and self.

The commencement speaker said several things, not only to those graduating, but also to us in the audience. They are worthy of me telling you.

    1. Save your money. People with money have more power. They can accomplish more. They can build more. It's not easy to save money and live for the future when you want things today. But the rewards are there. It's never too late to start saving.
    2. Travel outside of the United States. Only one in five Americans has a passport. When you experience different cultures you are changed. You see the world differently. Your own issues don't seem to be so critical. You can look at your own life more objectively. It's never too late to start seeing the world.

How does this apply to your business? You need money to travel. When you travel you get a chance to relax. When you are away from the daily grind and the physical environment, you can more clearly see where you should go. Even if you can't get out of the country, go play somewhere. The change will allow you to return more positive and enthused. Shouldn't we all be living life that way? Go - get out of here!

Q: Is money the best incentive to give my employees?

A: There is no doubt that money goes a long way to helping people be more productive. But stop and think before you hand out your next dollar. What do people really want? They want to be noticed. To be thanked. To be appreciated. You can do this in ways that will cost you less money. Consider giving movie tickets, or a gift certificate to a restaurant or a Starbuck's certificate or just a plain 'thank you' in front of the staff. What your staff really wants is for you to 'see' them. Shake their hand, pat them on the back. Make them feel like something of value. Isn't that what we all want?
